It has been announced that Professor. Dr. Engr. Shah Alimuzzaman Belal has been appointed as the new vice chancellor of Bangladesh University of Textiles (BUTEX) in the Tejgaon Industrial Area of the capital.

The Ministry of Education issued a gazette notification on 30 April 2023 regarding this matter as part of their gazette notification program. Dr. Engr. Shah Alimuzzaman Belal has been the head of the department of Fabric Engineering for the past four years before becoming the Vice Chancellor of the university. He replaces Professor Engr. MA Kashem as the former VC.

Prof. Dr. Shah Alimuzzaman Belal

He was born in the year 1967, in GHOP Central Road, Jashore, Bengalese. He passed  B.Sc.-in-Textile Engineering from the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh in 1989,  M.Sc.-in-Textile Engineering from the University of Ghent, Belgium in 1996, and  MPhil-in-Textile Science and Technology from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST), U.K. in 2003, and PhD.-in-Textile Science and Technology from the University of Manchester, U.K. in 2014. After one year industrial job, he joined the Bangladesh University of Textiles (Former college of textile engineering and technology, Dhaka) in 1993. He is a life fellow of IEB. He has written many books during his lifetime. As an author, he is known for his books “Understanding Textiles for a Merchandiser”, “The Structure and Analysis of Cloth” and “Fabric Manufacturing Technology-III”. Additionally, he is the editor of two books published by Bangladesh Technical Education Board, “Knitting-I” and “Knitting-II”.

On 22nd December 2010, Bangladesh University of Textiles started its journey with the upgrade of its College of Textile Technology, with the aim of creating new opportunities for higher studies, research, and development in this sector, thus creating Bangladesh University of Textiles. As far as higher education and research are concerned, it has been striving hard to maintain high standards. There is no doubt that Bangladesh University of Textiles will play a very notable role in upgrading the textile education and making it compatible with the era of globalization in which we live.

Let’s know about Textile Engineering

textile engineering is a branch of engineering that deals with the design and production of fabrics, yarns, and fibers. Textile engineers apply principles of science and engineering to the production of textiles, ensuring that they are functional, durable, and aesthetically pleasing. Textile engineering involves the development of new fibers, fabrics, and yarns, as well as the improvement of existing ones. Textile engineers use a variety of techniques and technologies, such as weaving, knitting, and spinning, to create textiles for various applications. One of the major areas of focus in textile engineering is the development of functional textiles, which have specific properties that make them suitable for particular applications. For example, medical textiles are used in the healthcare industry for wound dressings, surgical gowns, and other medical applications. These textiles must have specific properties such as antimicrobial properties, breathability, and durability. Another area of focus in textile engineering is the development of sustainable textiles. Textile engineers are working to create textiles that have a lower environmental impact, from the sourcing of raw materials to the manufacturing process and the end-of-life disposal.Textile engineering also plays a significant role in the fashion industry. Textile engineers work closely with fashion designers to develop fabrics that meet their specific design requirements. They also ensure that the fabrics are produced in a cost-effective manner, while still maintaining high quality and durability.

In summary, textile engineering is a multidisciplinary field that involves the application of engineering principles to the design and production of textiles. The field is diverse and encompasses a broad range of applications, from medical textiles to sustainable textiles to fashion fabrics. Textile engineers play an essential role in developing innovative and functional textiles that meet the needs of various industries and consumers.
