How to Calculate Yarn Imperfection Index (IPI)
What is the Yarn Imperfection Index (IPI)?
IPI stands for imperfection per inch. The yarn imperfection index measures thin and thick places and neps in 1000 m of yarn. Yarn imperfection is a common yarn fault. Higher fiber opening results in fewer imperfections in yarn. The yarn imperfection index also measures the yarn quality. On the other hand, Yarn quality plays a crucial role in fabric appearance. A small defect in yarn can affect the fabric quality. However, yarn imperfection index (IPI) is a common parameter. This parameter is used to evaluate yarn quality. However, this article will briefly explain the imperfection index calculation.

Yarn Imperfection index
A short description of imperfection index is given below:

- For ring spun yarn, total number of thin places ( -50%), thick places (+50%), and npes (+200%) present per 1000 meters of yarn is called imperfection index (IPI)
- But, in case of rotor spun yarns, the number of neps (+280) per 1000 meters is calculated instead of (+200) neps.
Thin place (-50%)
A thin place is place in yarn where the diameter becomes significantly smaller than the average yarn diameter. A thin place of -50% mean the cross-section of the yarn at the thick place is only 50% of its mean cross section or less.
Thick place (+50%)
A thick place is a localized increase the diameter of yarn. A thick place of +50% means the cross-section of the yarn at the thick place is 150% of its mean cross section or more.
Neps (+200%)
It is a small tangle of fibers that look as tiny knots in the yarn.On the other hand, +200% Neps indicates the cross-section at the nep is 240% of the mean cross-section of the yarn or more.
Neps (+280%)
+280% Neps indicates the cross-section at the nep is 280% of the mean cross-section of the yarn or more.
Yarn Imperfection Calculation
The formula for imperfection index calculation is given below:
- Yarn imperfection Index (IPI)= Number of thin places/1000 m+ number of thick places/1000 m + Number of neps/ 1000 m
- Let’s, thin places (-50%)= 15, thick places= 10, and neps (+200)= 4
- Then, IPI= 15+10+4= 29
Date Table
For the assessment of the yarn imperfection index, the following table is used:
| IPI Range | Yarn Grade | Appearance | Fabric quality |
| 100+ | Poor | Very uneven | Many defects, downgraded |
| 51-100 | Average | Slightly uneven | Visible imperfections |
| 21-50 | Good | Smooth | Good, minor issues |
| 5-20 | Premium | Very smooth, even | Excellent, defect-free |
Why is IPI increased?
The following reasons are responsible for increasing the imperfection index.
- In an appropriate break draft increased the yarn imperfection index.
- Besides, IPI is increased owing to the higher openness (due to the used over beating) in the blow room.
- Fiber rupture is also responsible for the IPI increase.
- IPI is increased for a thicker lap.
- Additionally, Poor fiber quality increases IPI
- Improper card setting increases Neps.
- High spinning speed is also responsible for IPI increase.
- Finally, low humidity or excessive humidity increases the imperfection index.
Effects of High Imperfection Index
- Quality of yarn is lower.
- Besides, yarn breakage increases owing to a high yarn imperfection index.
- A high imperfection index also impacts weaving efficiency as well as knitting performance.
- Additionally, high yarn imperfection index increases dyeing defects.
- Finally, it reduced customer satisfaction.
How to Reduce Yarn Imperfections
- High-quality fibers should be used to reduce yarn imperfections.
- Carding machines are maintained properly.
- Additionally, the drafting setting should be properly.
- The quality of yarn should be monitored regularly.
Conclusion:
The main reasons of high yarn imperfection index is low fiber quality. Besides, inefficient carding, drafting faults, and improper environmental conditions are responsible for high imperfection index. So, high-quality fiber and proper machine step-up help to reduce yarn imperfections.
