Sewing Thread Consumption:

There is a need for tight cost control in apparel merchandising in today’s competitive market. By estimating thread requirements for particular garment styles or contracts realistically, you can not only save money, but also save on warehouse maintenance. As, if you purchase sewing threads more than you need, you will have to perform extra warehouse maintenance. To understand sewing thread consumption, we also need to understand seams and stitches.

Why Knowing Sewing Thread Consumption is Important?

Knowing sewing thread consumption is most important for those who work in the apparel and textile industry. Here I find out some important points.

  1. Cost estimation: For accurate cost estimation in the production process, it is essential to determine the amount of sewing thread needed for sewing the garments.
  2. Resource planning: Knowing thread consumptions helps plan resources efficiently. It ensures that an adequate amount of thread is need to order for smooth production.
  3. Inventory management: Having the right thread consumption data helps to maintain optimal inventory levels.
  4. Time efficiency: accurate thread consumption data can contribute to time efficiency in production planning.
  5. Sustainability: Understanding thread consumption is also important for sustainability efforts. Excessive thread waste can contribute to environmental concerns and efficient thread management helps minimize waste.

Factor of Thread Consumption:

Before sewing thread consumption, we have to consider some factor. They are given below:

  1. Thickness of fabric: we have to consider thickness of fabric when we making consumption of sewing thread. because thickness influences the length of thread
  2. Fabric ply: The number of fabric plies being to sewn together is directly impacts on thread consumption.
  3. Stitch type: Stitch type is an another factor. Different stitch types have varying thread consumption. For example, a straight stitch ness less thread compared to a decorative stitch or zigzag stitch.
  4. Stitch density: The number of stitches per inch or centimeter that affects the thread consumption. Higher stitch density usually requires more thread.
  5. Seam width: the seam width is an important factor. Wider seams require more thread to cover the seam length.
  6. Yarn quality: Higher quality of threads may be stronger and more resistant to breakage.
  7. Garment design: The design of garments, such as the presence of embroidery or other decorative elements that influence the thread consumption.
  8. Garments size: Generally, larger garments require more thread due to increased fabric and seam lengths.
  9. Fabric types: Different fabrics have varying levels of thickness which is impact on thread consumption.
  10. Sewing machine setting: the tension or stitch setting of sewing machines can affect the thread consumption. For example, thread breakage will be increased due to improper tension setting. As a result, need more thread and thread wastage will be increased.

In order to accurately determine the amount of thread needed for a particular garment, manufacturers and designers need to consider all of these factors together.

Sewing Thread Consumption Formula:

  • For Stitch types-101:
    • Sewing consumption= 3+2TS
  • For Stitch types-301:
    • Sewing consumption= 2+2TS
  • For Stitch types-401:
    • Sewing consumption= 4+2TS
  • For Stitch types-500:
    • Sewing consumption= 3+4S(W+T)

Here,

  • T= Thickness of seam
  • S= Number stich per inch
  • W= Wide of seam

Exercise:

Problem-1: If the seam thickness is 0.005 inch and the number of stitches is 9 per inch, find the yarn consumption for stitch type 101.

Problem-2: If the seam thickness is 0.01 inch and the number of stitches is 10 per inch, find the yarn consumption for stitch type 301.

Problem-3: calculate the yarn consumption for stitch type 401, if seam thickness is 0.015 inch and stitch per inch is 15

Problem-4: calculate the thread consumption for stitch type 501, if thickness of seam is 0.02 inch, stitch per inch 15, wide of seam ¼ inch.

Problem-5: Calculate stich per inch for stitch types 401, if thread consumption is 4.55 inch and seam density is 0.014.
