What is Yarn? 8 Easy Differences Between Staple Yarn and Filament Yarn
January 19, 2023

Most apparel and furnishing fabrics are produced from yarns. A yarn is a continuous strand of textile fibers, filaments, or materials in a form suitable for knitting, weaving, or otherwise intertwining to form a textile fabric. According to the textile institute: “A product of substantial length and relatively small cross-section consisting of fibers and filaments with or without a twist is called yarn.” There are many kinds of yarn. In this article, I will present, simple differences between carded yarn and combed yarn.First, we will come to know what is carded and combed yarn.

What is Carded Yarn?

Carded yarn: The yarn, made from short-staple and lower-quality fiber, is called carded yarn. In other words, yarn that is obtained without combing is called carded yarn. Carded yarn is low cost and low strength. It has a more rigid hand feel. The short fiber percentage is high as the combing machine is not used for producing carded yarn. Carded yarn is low count. It’s about 10-45. Dyeing and knitting wastage is very high.

What is Combed Yarn?

Combed yarn: The yarn which is made from the finest and longer fiber is called combed yarn. In other words, the yarn obtained by combing is called combed yarn. The quality of this type of yarn is very smooth. Strength is higher than carded yarn. Combed yarn is soft, more lustrous, less hairy, has good water absorbency, higher breaking strength, and uniform yarn.

Difference between carded yarn and combed yarn:

Carded yarn Combed yarn
1. The yarn which is obtained without combing is called carded yarn. 1. The yarn which is obtained by combing is called combed yarn.
2. No need to use a lap former machine.2. Need lap former machine to form sliver into a lap.
3.Carded yarn is less uniform than combed yarn.3. Combed yarn is more consistent than carded yarn.4.
4. Carded yarn TPI is higher than combed yarn.4. Combed yarn TPI is lower than carded yarn.
5. Show less strength.5. Show more strength.
6. Carded yarn is more hairy than combed yarn.6. Combed yarn is less hairy than carded yarn.
7. Less lustrous than combed yarn.7. More lustrous than carded yarn.
8. In the case of color fastness to rubbing, carded yarn show poor result than combed yarn.8.In case of color fastness to rubbing, combed yarn show a better result than carded yarn.
9. Combing action is not done here.9.Combing action is done here.
10. The quality of the carded yarn is not better than the combed yarn.10. The quality of the combed yarn is better than the carded yarn.
11. In carded yarn, the short fiber percentage is high.11. In combed yarn, the short fiber percentage is low.
12. The carded yarn has a higher amount of protruding ends.12. Combed yarn has fewer amount of protruding ends.
13. Carded yarn is less expensive.13. Combed yarn is more expensive.
14. Here medium to low twist is used.14. Here medium to high twist is used.
15. Less regular in size and appearance.15. More regular in size and appearance.

Here, What is carded and combed yarn/Combed yarn vs Carded yarn are described simple way.

Conclusion:

The difference shows that the carded yarn’s quality is poorer than the combed yarn. Because there is more short fiber in carded yarn. However, I tried my best to describe the difference between carded and combed yarn. If you have any questions, you can inform me by comment box.

  1. […] Yarn is produced from fibers that have only been carded but not combed. In the spinning factory, fiber materials are first opened and cleaned. If necessary, blend two or more fibers together in the first stage. Then fiber converts into individual fibers on a card and produces a sliver called a card sliver. Card slivers are fed on a draw frame to give drafting. Drafting leads to a reduction of the fiber mass per sliver and produces a draw frame sliver. Compared to the carded sliver, the drawn sliver better show a better fiber alignment towards the longitudinal axis of the sliver. Drawn slivers also show a higher degree of parallelization between the fiber. Finally, a yarn spun out of this sliver is called a carded yarn. […]
