Calculation of Fabric Consumption for a Long Sleeve Basic Shirt in Easy Formula

Introduction:

The concept of consumption refers to the amount of raw material used to determine the price of a garment. A garment’s consumption is calculated by calculating the amount of fabric, sewing thread, zipper, button, and other accessories needed to produce the garment up until exporting.

Internationally fabric having five types of width such as 35inch, 45 inch, 50 inch, and 60 inch. Generally it is visible that after consumption of fabric, we having perform some washing brushing or finishing treatment to develop fabric quality. After performing the above treatment, fabric shrinks 1-2 inch from dimension. For that’s why we should consume fabric excluding 1-2 inch from the fabric width. We calculate and determine the consumption of fabric by two system:

  1. Marker planning system.
  2. Mathematical system.

In this experiment, we will determine the consumption of shirt by mathematical system. Mathematical systems are based on rough estimations. The consumption of a sample garment or consumption based on the measurement sheet is calculated mathematically by measuring the length and width of each part.

Objectives:

  1. To know about fabric consumption.
  2. Come to learn consumption formula for woven fabric.
  3. To know how to calculate require fabric for long sleeve shirt.

Apparatus:

  1. Long sleeve shirt
  2. Measuring tape
  3. Shape card.
  4. Tailoring clack.
  5. Calculator

 Basic woven shirt consist of following part:

S/NPart name
 1.Collar
 2.Collar band
 3.Yoke
 4.Back part
 5.Front part
 6.Pocket
 7.Sleeve
 8.Cuff

Fabric consumption of long sleeve shirt:

Fabric required for collar:

Figure 01: Collar

Length = (18 +3.25+1) inch = 22.25 inch [1 inch for sewing allowance,(1.625+1.625)=3.25 inch for tie gap ]

Width = (2.75+1+1) inch=4.75inch [1 inch for sewing allowance, 1inch for round]

Fabric consumption for collar= Length × width×2 [Collar has two part]

                                      = {(22.25×4.75)× 2} inch2

                                        = 211.38 inch2

Fabric required for collar band:

Figure 02: Collar band

Length = (20+1) inch = 21 inch [1 inch for sewing allowance]

Width = (2.30+1) inch = 3.30 inch [1 inch for sewing allowance]

Fabric consumption for collar band= Length × width×2 [ Collar band has two part]

                                               = {(21× 3.30)×2} inch2

                                               =138.6 inch2

Fabric required for Yoke:

Figure 03: Yoke

Length = (26+1) inch = 27 inch [1 inch for sewing allowance]

Width = (6+1+1) inch = 8 inch [1 inch for sewing allowance, 1inch for round]

Fabric consumption for yoke= Length × width×2  [Yoke has two part]

                                            = {(27× 8) ×2} inch2

                                       =432 inch2

Fabric required for back part:

Figure 04: Back part

Length = (32+1) inch = 33 inch [1 inch for sewing allowance]

Width = (26+1) inch = 27 inch [1 inch for sewing allowance]

Fabric consumption for back part= Length × width

                                                 = (33× 27) inch2

                                                = 891 inch2

Fabric required for front part:

Figure 05: Front part

Length = (34+1) inch = 35 inch [1 inch for sewing allowance]

Width = {(26+1) inch+ (1.75×2) inch} = 30.5 inch [1 inch for sewing allowance,1.75 for pleat, pleat has two part]

Fabric consumption for front part= Length × width

                                            = (35×30.5) inch2

                                             =1067.5 inch2

Fabric required for pocket:

Figure 06: Pocket

Length = (8.75+1+1) inch = 10.75 inch [1 inch for sewing allowance, 1 inch for pleat]

Width = (7+1) inch = 8 inch [1 inch for sewing allowance]

Fabric consumption for pocket= Length × width

                                        = (10.75× 8) inch2

                                        = 86 inch2

Fabric required for sleeve:

Figure 07: Sleeve

Length = (25.75+1) inch = 26.75 inch [1 inch for sewing allowance]

Fabric consumption for sleeve = Length × width×2 [For two sleeve]

                                         = {(26.75× 20.13)×2} inch2

                                         =1076.96 inch2

Fabric required for cuff:

Figure 08: Cuff

Length = (12.25+1) inch = 13.25 inch [1 inch for sewing allowance]

Width = (3.75+1) inch = 4.75 inch [1 inch for sewing allowance]

Fabric consumption for cuff= Length × width×4 [4 For two cuff, every cuff has two part]

                                       = { (13.25× 4.75)×4} inch2

                                       = 251.75 inch2

Total fabrics consumption:

We mentioned before, internationally available fabric width is 35 inch, 45 inch, 50 inch and 60 inch. We take 45 inch width fabric.

Actual fabric width=(45-1) inch=44 inch [ Uneven fabric 1 inch.

Conclusion:

In RMG sector, most important task is consumption. From this experiment we learned how to calculate consumption for long sleeve shirt. We also learn how to calculate required fabric in length. This experiment will help in our future life. Thanks to our teacher to help us.
