MS Assistantship in Biology, Forestry, Environmental Science– Ecological Response of Forests to Managed Wildfire.
About Eastern Washington University
In collaboration with the Washington Department of Natural Resources, Eastern Washington University, USA is recruiting an MS student to study the ecological response of forests to managed wildfires in the Colville National Forest. As well as assessing tree mortality and recruitment, the student will also look at changes in species diversity, invasive species cover, fuel loading, and shrub cover with an undergraduate assistant. As the monitoring protocols are defined, the student is encouraged to develop a specific research question for their thesis within the context of the overall project. The appropriate thesis advisor will be identified once a thesis project’s focus has been determined.
Approximately 350 undergraduates major in Biology at Eastern Washington University, USA, which has 17 tenure-track faculty. Among the facilities are a field station at Turnbull National Wildlife Reserve, a research greenhouse, and a new aquatics center. A shared molecular biology lab, along with the equipment in individual faculty members’ labs, is also available.

Salary
The position will include a full-time summer salary along with a salary for 20 hours/week during the academic year. The total annual salary will be $28,897.
Date For Application of MS Assistantship in Biology
The desired start date is June 15th ,2024. Although a slightly later date may be possible.
Qualification for MS Assistantship:
Students must meet the requirements of EWU’s graduate program and be approved by the Biology faculty for admission.
Educational Qualification:
- A B.S. in a relevant field e.g. Environmental Science, Biology, and Forestry.
- Candidate must be knowledge or ability to learn the trees of Eastern Washington.
- Capability to use GPS, Maps, Compass.
- Candidate should have a valid unrestricted drivers license.
- Candidate should have ability to interact with the public.
Other Skill:
- Knowledge of ESRI/GIS.
- Familiarity with R.
- A background in wildland fire.
- Leadership experience.
- Wilderness first aid.
For extended periods of time during the day, work will be conducted in remote areas in rugged terrain without vehicles. Physical exertion will be required working outdoors in all weather conditions. The travel schedule may include several days away from Cheney.
