Introduction:

A public university in Alabama, the University of Alabama is one of the oldest and largest. This university offer fully funded PhD position. This university has been classified as a “R1: Doctoral Universities — Very High Research Activity”. Graduates of our Mechanical Engineering program are sought after by prestigious companies such as Michelin, Lockheed Martin, NASA, Mercedes Benz, Northrup Grumman, and more. It is notable that UA has won 18 national championships in football, and its basketball team recently reached the NCAA tournament’s final four. The strategic location of Tuscaloosa, about 50 miles from Birmingham, allows for easy access to major metropolitan areas, including Atlanta, Nashville, Memphis, and New Orleans, all within 300 miles.

About Dr. Zhou Yu

Dr. Zhou Yu earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Shandong University in China and his doctorate from Virginia Tech. Starting in August, Dr. Zhou Yu will become an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Alabama. In addition to postdoctoral training at both Argonne and Los Alamos National Laboratories, he has more than 40 publications and over 1600 citations (Google Scholar) . His research involves molecular simulations, battery materials, and electrochemistry.

Dr. Zhou Yu is looking for motivated and talented individuals to join his research group. Molecular simulations will be used to understand the physicochemical properties of advanced functional materials, particularly battery materials. Oak Ridge and Argonne National Laboratory scientists will collaborate closely with successful candidates on innovative research projects. Stipends and benefits are competitive for these fully funded positions.

Required Qualification for Fully Funded PhD Position:

  • The candidate should have a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Thermal Energy and Power Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, or a related field. A Master’s degree is preferred, but not essential.
  • If you hold a bachelor’s degree, you must have a minimum GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale. If you hold a master’s degree, you must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
  • English proficiency requirements: Applicants with a TOFEL > 79 (or IELTS 6.5) and a GRE 300 (The GRE is automatically waived for applicants with a master’s degree or a waiver can be requested by Bachelor’s degree holders with five or more years of field-related experience.)
  • It would be beneficial for the candidate to be familiar with molecular simulation software or packages (e.g., GROMACS, LAMPS, GAUSSIAN, VASP, ADF, CP2K, etc) and proficient in one computer programming language (e.g., Python, MATLAB, C, etc).
